EDX: What To Expect

Nerve Conduction Study: Small recording electrodes will be placed on the surface of your skin over target muscles. The examiner will stimulate specific nerves along the arms and/or legs. Patients typically feel a mild thump sensation. Most patients are able to tolerate this very well. Each stimulation will be recorded by the electrodes and analyzed for the speed and strength of the signal.

Electromyography Study: A small recording probe is inserted just beneath the skin into the muscle. This probe records electrical information from the muscle. You will be asked to move your arm or leg in a certain way to activate the muscle. This portion of the study may cause minimal muscle soreness that typically goes away soon after the study.

Ultrasound Study: An ultrasound head is used to visualize the nerves and other anatomical structures; this is completely painless.
